Small Claims Procedure

Small claims are handled by the “juge de proximité” or the “tribunal d’instance” depending on the amount claimed. The maximum amount that can be claimed in the “juge de proximité” court is €10,000, while the maximum amount that can be claimed in the “tribunal d’instance” court is €4,000. The procedure is relatively informal, and lawyers are not required, although they can be present if both parties agree.
