Small Claims Procedure

Small claims are handled by the Justice of the Peace (Juge de Paix/Kantonrechter) in the district where the defendant resides or where the dispute occurred. The maximum amount that can be claimed in small claims court is €5,000. The procedure is relatively informal, and lawyers are not required although they can be present if both parties agree.
